MARRAKECH

INTRODUCTION :

Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, is a major economic center and home to mosques, palaces and gardens. The medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire, with mazelike alleys where thriving souks (marketplaces) sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewelry. A symbol of the city, and visible for miles, is the Moorish minaret of 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque.

FES

INTRODUCTION :

Fes is a northeastern Moroccan city often referred to as the country’s cultural capital. It’s primarily known for its Fes El Bali walled medina, with medieval Marinid architecture, vibrant souks and old-world atmosphere. The medina is home to religious schools such as the 14th-century Bou Inania and Al Attarine, both decorated with elaborate cedar carvings and ornate tile work.

WHAT TO EXPLORE :

That famous Bab Boujeloud (Blue Gate) is here where you can access Talaa Kebeera - a massive street Fes hubbing all that medina jazz. Fes is famous for its leather goods and the sight of tanneries has become a renowned must-see in every guidebook. Chouara Tannery is located 20-30 minutes by foot from the Blue Gate. A Tunisian refugeeFatima el-Fihria established Kairaouine mosque established in 859. It was later expanded by Almoravides during the 12th century. Today, the mosque has been recently restored but non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, so you can simply peek at its courtyard from the main door.

ESSAOUIRA

INTRODUCTION :

Essaouira is a port city and resort on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Its medina (old town) is protected by 18th-century seafront ramparts called the Skala de la Kasbah, which were designed by European engineers. Old brass cannons line the walls, and there are ocean views. Strong "Alizée" trade winds make the city’s crescent beach popular for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

WHAT TO EXPLORE :

Essaouira’s walled medina dates from the late 18th century and was added to Unesco’s World Heritage list in 2001. It is an outstanding and well-preserved . Explore Mosque Sidi Ahmed ou Mohammed. This 18th-century building near Pl Moulay Hassan has an important library (closed to visitors) containing some manuscripts donated by Sultan Sidi . Gnaoua and World Music Festival - Essaouira overflows every year for the celebrated Gnaoua and World Music Festival, a four-day extravaganza with concerts staged at venues.

AIT BENHADDOU

INTRODUCTION :

Aït Benhaddou is an ighrem, along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco

WHAT TO EXPLORE :

This is a traditional Mud Brick city on the edge of the High Atlas Mountains. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has featured in many films, mostly as a replacement for Jerusalem. It has appeared in more than 10 movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.

Ait ben Haddou is more than just a film set, though; it is a ksar, a fortified village whose history goes back almost a thousand years, although the maze of narrow and crenulated towers you see these days are mainly from the 17th century. As a strategic stop for caravans of camels, often numbering hundreds, on the trans-Saharan trade route from the Sudan to Marrakech carrying gold, silver and slaves and returning with salt, it would have been a thriving town, home to thousands. As well a private homes - everything from small palaces to modest one-room dwellings - there were communal areas including a public square, a mosque, a caravanserai to house those travelling with the caravans, grain threshing areas outside the ramparts, a fortified granary (agadir) at the top of the village, the last redoubt in time of invasion, and two cemeteries, Muslim and Jewish.
